IFTA is a base jurisdiction agreement among 48 United States and 10 Canadian Provinces for reporting tax in a single jurisdiction of the motor fuel use of Qualified Motor Vehicles operating in more than one jurisdiction.

A Qualified Motor Vehicle (QMV) is a motor vehicle used, designed, or maintained for the transportation of persons or property, with a power unit that

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms; or
  • Has three axles or more, regardless of weight; or
  • Is used in combination with a trailing unit, a combined weight that exceeds 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms.

Louisiana IFTA License

You can obtain IFTA License from the Louisiana Department of Revenue. You can submit the completed IFTA application by mail to:

Louisiana IFTA Decals

After the IFTA license application is processed, two Louisiana IFTA decals will be issued for each qualified motor vehicle at no cost. Decals should be displayed outside the vehicle, one on each side of the cab.

Louisiana IFTA Renewal

There are no fees associated with IFTA registration, licenses, or decals.

You need to renew the IFTA license each year online with the renewal application found at the Department's website www.revenue.louisiana.gov. You can also renew with the IFTA License Renewal Applications offered at no cost by the Department. Your renewal may be denied if you have not filed an IFTA report or have not remitted any monies due to a member jurisdiction.

Louisiana IFTA Decals

IFTA decals are $2.00 per set; you are required to have two decals per qualified vehicle. One decal should be placed on the lower rear exterior portion of both the passenger side and the driver side of the power unit.

Louisiana IFTA Penalties

Failure to file a return, filing a late return, or failure to remit any or all tax due will result in a penalty of $50.00 or 10% of the net tax due to all member jurisdictions, whichever is great. Interest is computed on all delinquent taxes dues each jurisdiction at a rate of 0.4167% per month.

Louisiana IFTA Refunds and Credits

Credits with amounts greater than $14.99 will be automatically refunded. For amounts less than $14.99, the taxpayer will need to request a refund from the Comptroller's office.
