IFTA is a base jurisdiction agreement among 48 United States and 10 Canadian Provinces for reporting tax in a single jurisdiction of the motor fuel use of Qualified Motor Vehicles operating in more than one jurisdiction.

A Qualified Motor Vehicle (QMV) is a motor vehicle used, designed, or maintained for the transportation of persons or property, with a power unit that

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms; or
  • Has three axles or more, regardless of weight; or
  • Is used in combination with a trailing unit, a combined weight that exceeds 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms.

Louisiana IFTA License

You can obtain IFTA License from the Louisiana Department of Revenue. You can submit the completed IFTA application by mail to:

Louisiana IFTA Renewal

You need to renew the IFTA license each year online with the renewal application found at the Department's website www.revenue.louisiana.gov. You can also renew with the IFTA License Renewal Applications offered at no cost by the Department. Your renewal may be denied if you have not filed an IFTA report or have not remitted any monies due to a member jurisdiction.

Louisiana IFTA Decals

IFTA decals are $2.00 per set; you are required to have two decals per qualified vehicle. One decal should be placed on the lower rear exterior portion of both the passenger side and the driver side of the power unit.

IFTA decals are valid from January 1 through December 31 of the calendar year and may be displayed one month prior to the effective date. However if the licensee chooses to display renewal credentials prior to January 1, current credential should also remain in the qualified vehicle until January 1.

Louisiana IFTA Quarterly Report and Due Date

The due date for the IFTA quarterly tax report is the last day of the month following the last day of the quarter for which the return is being filed. And, the due will be next successive day if the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday.

Louisiana IFTA Penalties

If you fail to file a required tax return or filed an incorrect return, and, if the circumstances indicate negligence or disregard of rules and regulations without any intent to defraud, you would be imposed a penalty. The penalty would be at 5 percent of the tax or deficiency found to be due or $10 whichever is greater.

Louisiana IFTA Refunds

You can claim a refund on the IFTA quarterly tax report for any overpayment of tax in a reporting quarter. You will be refunded if the Department ensures that you have no tax liabilities, no outstanding audit assessments in any of the member jurisdictions. You may be denied a refund if you have failed to report any quarterly tax. Please note that your credits shall not be carried forward. Each quarter will stand on its own.
